I will be running the Western Mass Mother’s Day Half Marathon this May to raise funds for the Cancer Connection and to honor the memory of my mother, Terry who passed away in December after battling cancer.
Mom always pushed us to reach for the stars and believe in our dreams. She modeled hard work, kindness, and dedication every day. She taught us girls how to be independent and strong just like she was.
It is proper that we set our fitness goals as high as a half marathon, as it will be a target that will take every bit of strength and determination we have! As my muscles ache and the alarm goes off so early every morning, I remind myself that this is a way to honor my mother’s commitment to mental and physical health. She would rise early to squeeze in a few trips up and down the hill with the dogs or take an afternoon hike through the woods everyday. During these moments Mom found peace and tranquility, as do I. Something about being out on a trail with a dog, smelling the forest and taking in its fresh, harmonious, sounds that keeps me centered and sane even during the most challenging times.
The Cancer Connection was an essential resource to my mother and our family. She appreciated the friendship and connections that it fostered in a time when her life was changing. Reiki, Livestrong, rowing and the gentleness of a simple phone call to check in kept her going through her challenging times.
Cancer touches everyone everyday, so please consider donating to help bring the wonderful supports of the Cancer Connection to our community.
Thank you!

WMass Mother's Day Half Marathon
This race is a fundraising benefit for Cancer Connection in Northampton, MA, which offers free services to people and their caregivers facing cancer in Western Mass.
Rachel is a young woman dealing with cancer who uses the aqua aerobics class at Cancer Connection. She said it's "a non-treatment way to also treat yourself. In that class I don't feel like a patient. And last fall, I was completely bald. I had no hair whatsoever. At the beginning of the class, I had eyebrows. Those were gone by the end of the class. It doesn't feel like treatment, but at the same time, it's still beneficial. I feel like that's what sets that class apart. It's also a very safe space. You're like, we all have the same thing in common. We don't even need to talk about it. We're in this world together and we're dealing with the same sort of crap, and it makes you feel comfortable."
With every $100 you raise, you've sustained another exercise class, support group or massage. Now through Mother's Day, you can help Rachel and make sure Cancer Connection is there for your family, friends and community when needed.
Cancer Connection emphasizes vitality and good times rather than isolation and illness. For more information about Cancer Connection, please call (413) 586-1642 or visit the website: www.cancer-connection.org and Facebook page: @cancerconnection413.
