It was a wet and dreary day, but still I competed in the Climb to Conquer Cancer on Sunday September 23, 2018. The event is a bike ride that features two competitive climbs up iconic Libby Hill in Richmond, Virginia. This hill, made famous during the 2015 UCI Road World (Cycling) Championships, is curvy and made of cobblestones. Not everyone can climb the hill...I did it last year and I did it again this year...on the slippery, wet cobblestones once at the beginning and then after riding 63 miles in the rain! Was it uncomfortable? Yes...but given what cancer patients endure with their treatments, it was all the more important that I persevere and finish the race.
Why? Because funds raised during this event will support cancer patients and fund life-saving cancer research taking place at Massey Cancer Center at VCU, right here in Richmond. Having lost my Dad and his Mother to cancer as well as many other close relatives and friends, I dream of a world without cancer...don't YOU?
The award ceremony, featuring red polka dot jerseys awarded to the "King of the Mountain" and "Queen of the Mountain" winners by young cancer patients, is the highlight of the event (I won one of those last year and I defended my title by winning it again this year!) and a touching view of how participants' dollars are making a real difference.
This event was put on by Amy's Army of Cancer Warriors, dedicated to fighting cancer. I am a Board Member and a co-founder. Thanks for taking the time to read this message. I hope you will consider making a 100% tax deductible donation to help me reach my goal!
