Our daughter Nicole started having seizures during her third year of college. Epilepsy does not run in our family and we had no idea how prevalent this disease was. In Virginia alone, there are over 80K people who have been diagnosed with Epilepsy. This changed Nicole’s and our lives immediately. She cannot drive, cannot work, and must be with someone at all times because she still does not have a cocktail of medications or device to control her seizure activity.
We have been to VCA, UVA, Cornell in New York City, John’s Hopkins in Maryland, and Mayo Clinic in Florida. We have been to the best and still do not have answers or solutions. Nicole has attempted to take her life twice due to this disease as this is very prevalent as well with people suffering from Epilepsy. The reason you do not see many people in public places having seizures is because people suffering from this disease have high social anxiety and do not come out that much. Seizure dogs provide that early warning so that people with Epilepsy can get themselves to a safe position and location before the seizure strikes. This gives them some control back into their lives and allows them to get back into the society without the fear of the unknown……when will it happen, where will it happen, and how will people react (this is the fear that all who suffer from Epilepsy deal with daily). Your donation not only helps Nicole but helps everyone in the same boat as Nicole so Thank You a million times for helping those who need it most!
