On June 1st, 2019 I will be part of a group of hikers and cyclists who are fundraising for the Kumi Christian Visionary School (KCVS) in the village of Kumi, Uganda. Born from the dreams of founder Silver Omakenyi and realized through a partnership with Chinese Community United Methodist Church (CCUMC) of Oakland, the school opened in 2014 now serves over 350 students in seven classrooms.
The school has a long list of capital needs that continues to grow: running water, electricity, tree planting, playground equipment, water well repair, entrance road, textbooks, desks, soccer balls, window panes - the list goes on. I’m hoping you will want to join me in this fundraising effort. Any amount you donate goes a long way to helping the school realize its goals. Learn more at the website: www.ycvm.org. I hope you will consider supporting the Kumi Benefit Hike/Ride and making a difference for the children of Kumi!
As an added incentive, all donations received by the event day will be matched dollar-for-dollar!
2019 Kumi Benefit Ride
Chinese Community United Methodist Church in Oakland, CA has been partnering in mission with villagers in Kumi, Uganda, to build and launch a 7-classroom school, Kumi Christian Visionary School (KCVS). Today, more than 350 eager students are being served, most of them from families who subsist on less than $2/day. The school has a long list of capital needs that continues to grow: running water, electricity, tree planting, playground equipment, water well repair, entrance road, textbooks, desks, soccer balls, window panes - the list goes on . But where will the money come from?
The answer is BIKE RIDING! There will be 2 routes, 32 and 43 miles, beginning and ending at Castro Valley United Methodist Church. And to engage the whole community, a 7-mile HIKE to Lake Chabot is an option.
This year’s fundraising will go towards the long list of capital needs. You can help us meet this goal by making your donations through event day, when funds will be matched dollar-for-dollar!!
The construction of Kumi Christian Visionary School (Uganda) began in 2007, with the dream of providing a quality education to the vulnerable children in the village of Kumi, many who were orphaned by civil wars and the AIDS epidemic. Funded completely by U.S. donors with a passion to make a difference, swampland was transformed into a school facility with 7 classrooms, lavatories, and a kitchen. The school opened its doors in 2014, and now serves hundreds of students in grades Nursery-7th grade.
The Annual Kumi Benefit Ride began in 2016, and over the years has raised funds to build 2 dormitories and shower facilities, construct a playground and perimeter fence, bring running water and electricity to the campus, and more. Excitement builds as each year brings us closer to providing a brighter future for hundreds of children. We thank all our participants and supporters for working alongside the people of Kumi to “Break the Cycle of Poverty.”
