Friends and Family,
A phrase I've worked hard to adopt, and now constantly work to pass on to my students, is: "I get to..." Whenever I think to myself "I HAVE to go for a run" or "I HAVE to get up early for work" I try to adjust my thinking and say to myself, "How fortunate that I GET to do these things." What a privilege it is to wake up each day, to have a healthy, whole body and mind. I know that not everyone gets to go for a run on two healthy legs, not everyone can independently take care of themselves and pursue their desired endeavors. How lucky I am!
With this in mind, I am dedicating myself to not only running the VT 100 race (100k) but also to raising $1,500 for Vermont Adaptive Ski and Sports. VASS is committed to empowering people of all disabilities through inclusive sports and recreational programming regardless of ability to pay.
As a Physical Education teacher I believe it is my responsibility to "walk the walk." One of my personal intentions is to model the critical importance of regularly doing the impossible. Not only do I hope to show my middle school students my dedication to physical persuits but also commitment to service to others. It's my goal to show them that helping others succeed does not take away from one's own success but rather adds to it, making life so much sweeter. Our school district regularly talks about 'equity and excellence' for all students, and I believe this also applies to all humans. The world is full of inequity, and I believe it is our responsibility to help extend access to those people who are historically without opportunity.
Please join me in accomplishing these two very hard things: completing a 100k ultramarathon, and raising $1,500 for an incredibly worthy cause. To show my commitment, I have put in the first $100 of my own money. From the bottom of my heart, thank you: every dollar makes a difference.
