One in 10 adults will have a seizure sometime during their life. Seizures can last from a few seconds to a few minutes. Please read up on how to react if you see someone having a seizure. Protecting that individual may save his or her life.
- Keep other people out of the way.
- Clear hard or sharp objects away from the person.
- Don't try to hold her/him down or stop the movements.
- Place her/him on their side if possible, to help keep her airway clear.
- Look at your watch at the start of the seizure, to time its length, and stay with the individual. If it doesn't stop after 10-15 minutes, call 911. Otherwise the indivdual DOES NOT need medical care.
- Don't put anything in the person's mouth. Contrary to a popular myth, you can't swallow your tongue during a seizure.
- When the seizure is over, reassure the individual and help him/her get to their destination. They will be tired and disoriented.
Wendy and John's lives have been touched by those with epilepsy. They've seen first hand how money raised to support awareness and treatment can improve the lives of those with epilepsy.
Please join us as we work to erase the stigmas that are still (ignorantly) attached to this disease. Help us support the estimated 80,000 -100,000 Virginians with epilepsy.
The Epilepsy Foundation of Virginia (EFVA) is designated as a 501(c)3 public charity by the Internal Revenue Service and as such relies on the donations of the public and those that it serves in order to survive. Your contribution is tax deductible.
