Have you ever thought you could help build a school in Africa?
On April 25th, 2020 I have committed to the challenge of cycling 34 miles to support KCVS, a Primary School in the village of Kumi, Uganda. Born from the dreams of a visionary young man named Silver Omakenyi, this amazing school was realized through a partnership with Chinese Community United Methodist Church (CCUMC) of Oakland. The school opened in 2014, and seven classrooms now serve over 150 students, many of them orphans who would otherwise not have access to a quality education. The villagers are mainly subsistence farmers trying to live on $1-2/day.
I am excited that this year's goal of $40,000 will fund the construction of a Preschool Wing on the school compound. As a former preschool teacher, I can avow to the effectiveness of early childhood education. I’m hoping you will want to join me in this effort. Any amount you donate goes a long way to helping the school realize its goals. Learn more at the website: www.ycvm.org. I hope you will consider supporting the Kumi Benefit Hike/Ride and making a difference for the children of Kumi!
As an added incentive, all donations received by event day will be matched dollar-for-dollar!
2020 Kumi Benefit Ride
Chinese Community United Methodist Church in Oakland, CA has been partnering in mission with villagers in Kumi, Uganda, to build and launch a 7-classroom school, Kumi Christian Visionary School (KCVS). Today, hundreds of eager students are being served, most of them from families who subsist on less than $2/day. The school now needs a separate Preschool facility to handle more than 100 children ages 3-5. But where will the money come from?
The answer is BIKE RIDING! There will be 2 routes, 34 and 48 miles, beginning and ending at Castro Valley United Methodist Church. And to engage the whole community, a 6.5 mile HIKE to Lake Chabot is an option.
This year’s fundraising will go towards the construction of the Preschool building. You can help us meet this goal by making your donations through event day, when funds will be matched dollar-for-dollar!!
What began as the dream of one young man to help vulnerable children in his underserved village in Kumi, Uganda, has grown into an NGO and Primary School. Through fundraising spearheaded by Chinese Community United Methodist Church (Oakland, CA) since 2010, Kumi Christian Visionary School was built and now serves hundreds of vulnerable children from preschool through 7th grade who live near the school.. Every year since 2015, cyclists and hikers have partnered to raise monies that have continued to build-out the campus, by constructing dormitories, bathing rooms, water systems, fencing, and an athletic field on the school compound.
