This March I will be joining six-time national champion and cyclocross superstar Tim Johnson for his five-day ride to Washington D.C. for the National Bicycle Summit.

There are many reasons why I am riding, but I think many of them can be summed up by a conversation I recently had with a random commuter during my walk over to South Station. He had seen me with a bike helmet and was asking me if I had been riding all day or was getting ready to ride. After I told him I commuted by bike he started telling me how he used to ride “back in his day” (he couldn’t have been any older than me). I asked him why he stopped and his response was “It’s too dangerous”. In the last 5 years (the time I’ve been a regular bike commuter) I’ve had similar conversations with probably 50 other people. For most of my life I just figured that anyone who wanted to ride a bike did so. That view has changed as it is now clear that there are plenty of people who would like to ride a bike (for recreation, commuting, or otherwise) who don’t because they don’t feel safe doing it.

I’m riding to raise awareness and support for the Bikes Belong Foundation because I believe we can change this. We don’t have to accept that riding on the road should be dangerous. People shouldn’t have to feel like they need to drive to a bike path in order to be safe riding their bike. This is more than just building bike lanes, bike paths and other infrastructure. This is also about changing our culture, how we view transportation and how we view the non-motorist (cyclist, pedestrians, etc.) users of our roads.

If any of this strikes a chord with you I hope you’ll please consider donating (scroll down to the bottom of the page). I also hope you’ll consider passing this along. This is as much about spreading the word and raising awareness as it is raising money. My goal is to get 500 people to donate just $5. That's less than the cost of a tube at your LBS. You'd give someone a tube if they needed it, wouldn't you?

Update: For anyone thinking of donating more than just $5, every $50 you donate gets you one entry in the fundraising raffle. I think the prize list will be growing but it does include a custom titatium frame from Firefly. Please visit the For Donors page  for complete details.

Visit the Ride on Washington website or Facebook page for more info.

Thank you so much!
