I can’t believe it’s been 20 years. I realize that it’s true, but I still find it hard to fathom.
You know my story, and you know the power of Beyond the 11th. So, this September 11, 2021, as we mark the milestone anniversary, I’m asking you to join me and my family with extra vigor and commitment.
This year’s ride, on behalf of all those who lost their lives that day, will be unlike any other. My entire clan will be riding with me: my husband Donald, and our kids Ben (23), Molly (21), Dina (19), with Rebecca (13) on the support team. Dina rode in 2019 and Molly rode in 2016. Ben did a 100K ride when he was 13, but this will be the first time he's doing all 3 days. I am so proud of my kids for choosing to spend the 20th anniversary in this way — for helping others by taking a challenging and positive path. I feel very blessed to be sharing this experience with my family and, in so many ways, with all of you.
We know that the money we are raising will have a meaningful impact as the case for championing women’s rights in Afghanistan cannot be overstated. Afghanistan still ranks as the worst place in the world to be a woman. After decades of war, terrorism, and insurgency, women and children still suffer disproportionately. But there is good news to report. While the needs are enormous, the programs that Beyond the 11th invests in are working. Since 2003, Beyond the 11th has made over $1,000,000 in grants that directly assist Afghan widows in developing sustainable livelihoods.
Please help me honor the Afghan widows for whom Beyond the 11th was created. And please help me remember all who lost their lives on that day, twenty years ago. If you gave $100 last year, consider doubling it this year. If you gave $250 last year, consider marking this milestone with a gift of $500. Our goal for Beyond the Bike 2021 is a bold, but attainable, $250,000.
Of course, every donation is important, but this year is extra special, and our vision is clearer and brighter than ever. We are not just giving hope to the widows, but actually imparting skills that will translate into earnings. That income can change their lives, their children’s lives, their communities, and ultimately, their country.
