June 20th marks the summer solstice and what would be my Mother’s 63rd birthday. On this day, I will be riding 50 – 100 miles in her honor in The Ride For Mental Health in New Paltz, NY. Mom struggled with mental health – and its outcomes - her entire adult life. While it is easy to recognize she suffered greatly from her mental health, it is clear she never had the resources necessary to help her manage the effects and survive her tribulations. Marlene Slater was a beautiful, kind-hearted, high-spirited human being. She was never truly accepted due to the interferences of ailments and their consequences. Despite her suffering, she managed to put her family, congregation, and community first and that is why I am fundraising in her honor.

I pledge to raise $1,000 in honor of my Mother, Marlene Slater. If you were in any way moved by my mother – or anyone that has suffered through mental health, please donate to this cause, and support me in ending the stigma associated with mental illness through education, awareness, and raising money for this ride. 100% of the proceeds raised will be donated to McLean Hospital, a Harvard Medical School affiliate, for the education, research, and treatment of mental illness including anxiety, borderline personality disorder, depression, eating disorders, and substance abuse.

Thank you for your contributions,

Eric Appelbaum
