Debbie's Delinquents
Once again, I will be riding in the Tour De Rhody to help raise funds for the Brown University Oncology Research Group (BrUOG).
BrUOG was created in 1994 to coordinate clinical cancer research for Brown’s affiliated hospitals and Alpert Medical School faculty. BrUOG’s main mission is to improve cancer care through the implementation of innovative, multidisciplinary cancer clinical trials. BrUOG provides the infrastructure for the efficient development and implementation of these trials, which are created by Brown University faculty.
The trials sponsored by BrUOG investigate novel, cutting-edge applications of chemotherapy, biologic agents, and other cancer treatments. Their trials are unique because they are investigator-initiated – conceptualized by practicing physicians, not by pharmaceutical companies. As such, these trials represent an incredibly important sector of cancer research. Because medical, radiation, and surgical oncologists are deeply familiar with both the latest research and stark realities of cancer, they are an unrivaled source of ideas for novel approaches to treatments.
I ride in honor of my mother Deborah – the namesake for our team “Debbie's Delinquents” – who lost her battle with Pancreatic Cancer in February of 2017. However, I also ride for all of our loved ones that have battled and often not overcome this horrendous disease. Chester Kent, Mary Leavitt, Bill Folsom, and countless others. In 2021 alone, we have already lost my dear cousin Jen Larkin and my best friend’s son Karl Greaves.
I invite you to join our team if you are able. The Tour De Rhody puts on a great event, and there is a distance suitable for every rider’s level. If you can’t ride with us, please consider making a donation to our team. Every little bit helps in the fight against this unrelenting disease that has impacted too many of our families and friends.
And yeah... our team slogan might be a bit crude, but I think we all know my Mom and Cousin Jen wouldn’t have held back their opinions.

In its first year in 2019, Tour De Rhody raised over $18,000 to support cancer research and in 2020 over $50,000. With your support we can continue to grow.
Tour De Rhody - Supporting the Brown University Oncology Research Group
Tour De Rhody began in 2019 as a road and gravel ride to support the Brown University Oncology Research Group (BrUOG) which coordinates clinical cancer research for Brown’s affiliated hospitals and Alpert Medical School faculty. In our first year we raised over $18,000 to support local cancer research and care. Despite COVID in 2020 we blew this away raising over $50,000 and we plan to grow every year. Please join us through riding, volunteering or supporting us as we bring better and innovative cancer care to Rhode Islanders and beyond.
