On July 11, I will be swimming 10 kilometers across Newfound Lake as part of Swim With A Mission, an extraordinary organization dedicated to supporting veterans and their families.
This event is meaningful to me for two reasons.
First, I believe deeply in the mission. Since 2017, Swim With A Mission has raised nearly $13.6 million for organizations that provide critical services to veterans, including mental health support, housing assistance, transportation, service dogs, scholarships for military families, and programs that help veterans overcome the challenges of PTSD and transition successfully to civilian life.
Second, I am swimming in memory of a fallen soldier, PFC Clinton Springer II, who died during Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan in 2010. While I never had the privilege of knowing him personally, I am grateful for his service and sacrifice. This swim is a small way to honor his memory and recognize the sacrifices made by so many members of our military and their families.
As a swimmer, I spend a lot of time in the water pursuing personal goals. This swim is different. It is an opportunity to use something I love to support a cause that matters.
The 10-kilometer distance will be the longest open-water swim I have ever attempted. The training has required early mornings, long hours, and frequently sore shoulders. But whatever challenges I experience on race day pale in comparison to the sacrifices made by those who have served our country.
