On Saturday, August 15, 2026, I will compete in the Mount Washington Auto Road Bicycle Hillclimb (MWARBH for those that enjoy inelegant acronyms) in New Hampshire. This 7.6 mile all-uphill race to the summit of the highest peak in the northeastern United States is considered by many to be the steepest cycling race in the world, gaining 4,678 ft at an average gradient of 12%, so of course I decided that this sounded like fun. Never mind that Mt. Washington is also home to some of the worst weather on earth. The highest non-tornadic wind speed ever recorded was at the summit of Mount Washington at 231 mph, and hurricane force winds are present 100 days a year on average. I am hopful that the weather gods will look down on comptetitors with bemusement rather than spite on the day of the race, but I have been training for this race and will be prepared for whatever the day brings.

For many participants, this event is a bucket list challenge, but the Mt. Washington Auto Road Bicycle Hillclimb is also notable becuase it is the largest annual fundraiser for Tin Mountain Conservation Center.  Please help me support a great environmental organization, Tin Mountain Conservation Center (TMCC), which has provided environmental education to over 75,000 students, campers, and individuals throughout schools and communities in Northern New Hampshire and western Maine for over 34 years. For a sample of some of the work TMCC does with students, link to TMCC YouTube Channel.
