On Saturday, August 15, 2026, I hope to again bike up Mount Washington, a 7.6 mile all-uphill race to the summit of the highest peak in the northeastern United States.  I do not entirely know why I do things like this (truly, at the start line I kind of want to run the other direction and sleep)!  Prominent among the reasons is the opportunity to honor the memories of two amazing educators and friends who left us all too soon - Peter Kaufman and Jean Whitney.  These two are my wings up the mountain.

It's been a tough (to say the least!) year for the planet, for people, for peace.  This has made it more challenging for so many simply trying to survive each day.  As I acknowledge the enormous privilege of racing bikes just for fun in a world that is literally and figuratively burning, I keep coming back to the inherent value of place (the beautiful rockpile that Mount Washington is), people and building community.  This event touches all three.

The race is a fundraiser for Tin Mountain Conservation Center (TMCC), which has provided environmental education to over 75,000 students, campers, and individuals throughout schools and communities in Northern New Hampshire and western Maine for over three decades.  Their work matters and it deserves our support.

With immense gratitude,

Susan
