I have worked as staff and volunteer with the Amherst Survival Center for many years and see, on a daily basis, the impact that this organization has on the lives of our neighbors. The ASC truly delivers on it's committment to feeding the community in so many ways. Throughout the pandemic, the Amherst Survival Center remained open, dramatically increased the amount of food they provided to people, and expanded access by offering grocery delivery, curbside pick-up, and low-contact pick up at the Center. Just to give you an idea, a family of four with two kids receives 160 pounds of food a month, or roughly 11 days' worth of food. Hike for Hunger
Join the Amherst Survival Center for our 2nd annual Hike for Hunger! Hike for Hunger is an opportunity for you to be outside and active while ensuring our neighbors have access to nutritious food. You can register as an individual or with a team and set your personal hiking goal. Once you register, you’ll be able to create your own fundraising page to start collecting donations from family and friends. Come October, head out on the trails wherever and whenever you’d like – with your family, your friends, or your furry friends – and share your adventures.

Proceeds from Hike for Hunger go directly to our food and nutrition programs, reaching more than 7,000 people annually. Since last year, we have more than doubled the number of meals we serve, now up to 300 hot lunches each day. We have roughly doubled the amount of food distributed to households through our Food Pantry, now up to about 11 days' worth of food per month. Our grocery delivery program rapidly expanded from serving a small cohort of seniors in two towns to 1,300 people a month in five communities. We need your support to maintain this expanded level of support for our neighbors.
Founded in 1976, the Amherst Survival Center addresses social determinants of health in Western Massachusetts through a community center that helps area residents meet their basic needs. We are the only organization of its kind locally to provide free meals, free groceries, free clothing and housewares, a free walk-in medical clinic, access to community resources, community activities, and specialized services for individuals experiencing homelessness, all under one roof.
Pre-Covid, we served 6,000+ people annually in about 48,000 visits. Since 2020, the Amherst Survival Center has more than tripled our daily meal service and doubled the amount of food provided by our food pantry, distributed via onsite shopping, curbside pickup, and delivery. In the last year, we provided more than 1,000,000 meals—prepared and groceries—to close to 7,000 people.
