I'm riding in honor of my friend of more than 40 years, Brent Thurn, who tragically lost his battle with mental illness February 20, 2021. He fought so hard to overcome his illness, committing suicide was the only way he knew to end his pain.
I miss him and our nearly daily conversations beyond words. It is my goal to continue advocating for mental health awareness so that others receive care, understanding, compassion, and pathways to hope, healing and recovery.
Brent was smart; always seeking knowledge and earned multiple degrees. He was an avid cyclist, dedicated ice hockey official & talented carpenter. He was a loyal and devoted husband & father. He was SO funny. Brent's sister Beth and I came up with our Team Name "Shake it Off," remembering a video Brent made of himself singing the popular song, facial expressions and all (link below!) and thought it was the perfect team name to "Shake Off" the mental health stigma.

The Ride for Mental Health 2022
The Ride for Mental Health is one of the first rides in the country to benefit mental health. The proceeds raised will be donated to McLean Hospital, a Harvard Medical School affiliate, for the education, research, and treatment of mental illness including anxiety, borderline personality disorder, depression, eating disorders and substance abuse. Our mission is to raise funds for McLean so that we can help accelerate the progress being made to help others who suffer from mental illness.
We also hope to end the stigma surrounding mental illness through education and awareness. The promotion of this ride is a start. Many if not most of us are touched by close friends and relatives who have suffered from one type or another of mental illness.
