Please help me support a great environmental org., Tin Mountain Conservation Center (TMCC), which has provided environmental education to more than 75,000 students, campers, and individuals during the past 33 years. To see a recent short video showcasing the critical work TMCC does with students, check out this kids' program on Feb 10 of last year.  Lots more examples of the work TMCC does with students here: TMCC YouTube Channel. The Mount Washington Auto Road Bicycle Hillclimb is the largest annual fundraiser for TMCC.

I personally believe it is essential to educate kids about nature, and expose them to its wonders - early, so that they develop an empathy, a compassion for the environment. It's the best way to develop stewards in the next generation.

On Saturday, August 19, 2023, COVID-permitting, I will bike up Mt Washington, a 7.6 mile all-uphill race to the summit of the highest peak in the northeastern US. We'll climb more than 4500 feet.  Many consider it the steepest cycling race in the world, averaging a 12% incline.

Mount Washington is also known for it's extreme weather -- as we were just reminded on Feb 3rd-4th! The highest non-tornadic wind speed ever recorded on earth was at the summit of Mount Washington at 231mph. Hurricane force winds are present 100 days a year on average -- and some years the winds on race day are formidable. (Although, if the winds are too high, and volunteers are unable to stand, the event will be moved to another date, as happened in 2007.)

This will be my 15th year racing in the event.  Just as in the old "Wide World of Sports" intro, over 15 years one can both grasp 'the thrill of victory' and 'the agony of defeat.'  In 2019, my 12th Mt W race, I had race number 12 (good luck charm!) and set a PR!  But as often as not, the mountain keeps you humble. In 2022, I was struggling with back pain and cramps and was forced to stand the final 10 minutes of the main part of the climb, then walked the wall - as shown in this page's 'profile' photo. It was my slowest finishing time; it's also the one I'm proudest of. Thanks to all of you for supporting me!  Accountability. Respect. Gratitude.
