(10/19/14)
home. the place we feel safest and where we start and end most days. at night it is the place that provides us the chance to escape the stressors and anxiety of the outside world and really feel like our true selves. we rest here.

i'm running in the 11th annual hot chocolate run for safe passage for the countless victims of domestic violence who don't have the same experience of "home" as i do.

this will be my second time participating in this event and it's a big deal to me because as hugely important an issue as combating violence in the home is, it is an also one that seems to fly under our collective radar most of the time, because it is not something that is easy to think or talk about. the numbers are staggering. close your eyes and count to 9. a woman was just beaten. in her home.

as many of you know, i am now an aunt. i cannot express to you how much love and joy that this beautiful little boy has brought to my family. he is everything that is right and good. his biological parents both have arrests for domestic violence. had my sister not adopted him, he would at the very least been witness to violence in the home (his home) and at the worst, been victim of it. most of you reading this have kids. the thought of someone hurting them is UNTHINKABLE. even allowing that thought to creep in brings immediate physiological changes to our bodies. keenan was one of the lucky ones. i'm running in this event for all of the beautiful boys and girls who are not lucky.

when victims are able to get away, we have to have a place for them to go. safe passage is doing all the right things. they offer shelter, counseling, advocacy, support groups and believe that empowering the victim is the start to helping her get her life back. they understand that domestic violence is typically male on female, but not always, and offer their services to anyone in need, regardless of gender, sexual orientation or gender identity.

so much of the bad stuff in our relationships with one another is cyclical in nature. we have to start breaking these cycles and give our kids a chance.

ok, the money part. i'm proud to be on my sister's team, Raising Change, LLC in this event, which is the major fundraiser for Safe Passage. in 2012 i fell just short of raising $1000, so my goal is to surpass 4 digits here. can you help? $5?, $50?, $500? or anything in between?? (in 2012, i did have someone anonymously donate $500, which was so freaking cool - if you're reading this, i still think of that from time to time and always smile - you helped a lot of people!)

thank you.

love to you all. x

Will you join me in supporting this terrific organization?

Every day, Safe Passage helps survivors of domestic violence take steps towards a brighter and safer future. Some of these steps are easier, and some are harder. Every step is important.

Before I walk or run, I’ve decided to Step Up for Safe Passage, and I’m asking you to join me. Please make a donation to support Safe Passage’s important work. Safe Passage relies on people like you and me to bring hope, safety, and justice to women and families.

Here are some ways Safe Passage will put your gift to work:

$30: Resources, support and hope for a woman calling the 24-hour hotline
$55: A survivor's first counseling session. For many of Safe Passage's clients, this is the first time they've felt heard. It's the first time in years that they've felt hopeful.
$120: A drop-in support group session for survivors of domestic violence
$225: Information, advice and support for a survivor facing a divorce or custody dispute
$500: Healing counseling for a child who has witnessed violence

All contributions are tax-deductible, and you’ll receive an emailed receipt immediately after you donate.

You can make a difference for families affected by domestic violence. I hope you’ll join me!

Thank you so much for your support!  If you want to register for the event or learn more about it, visit http://hotchocolaterun.com.
